ABSTRACT
The historical novel “Garoé” by Alberto Vázquez – Figueroa recreates the myth of the noble savage in the same way Montaigne, Rousseau and other classics of the genre did. The events take place within the exotic area of the Canary Islands, in the remote past of the New World discovery. The natives are innocent and kind human beings, who dwell in an earthly paradise, living in harmony with the surrounding nature. They know how to protect and preserve their land for the next generations; they also possess numerous moral qualities. Instead, the Spaniards who arrive on the island are cruel, miserly and greedy, thinking only of becoming rich and destroying everything. To them, the island is nothing but a rugged and inhospitable territory.
