We are gradually moving towards the era of“Green Computing” in which the primary design constraintsfor high-end computer architectures and systems are shiftedfrom peak performance to a combination of performance andenergy efficiency. This paradigm shift also entails the industryand the academia to emphasize on green software developmentwhere the primary goal is to make the software more energyefficient without compromising the performance. Manyresearchers and system practitioners have proposed differentstrategies and techniques to promote such development. In thispaper, we review existing design spaces and methods of energyefficient computations. We begin with presenting an energyefficient software development framework. This frameworkdefines a number of tasks that are grouped into four differentphases of the software development process. Afterwards, wehave presented several existing potential methods, tools andtechniques for improving performance and energy efficiencyand related these technologies to different phases of theframework. We have also highlighted a potential area ofresearch to promote energy efficient software development.
