Here we’re all equal! The ideology of equality and the constructionof ‘Otherness’ in media and educational settings. The focus ofthis article lies on the question of how linguistic diversity is talked about and dealt with in contemporary Sweden. More specifically, we examine media utterances which target the linguistic practices of young men who are perceived as “non-Swedish”. We also investigate the ways in which these young men who are the object of media attention actually use language in the classroom. The key argument of the article is that media utterances and classroom interactions have a common denominator: they are underpinned by a shared discursive constraint – a well-established ideology of equality, according to which individuals should be treated as equal irrespective of their social, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Our aim is to show the ways in which this ideology is normative insofar as it defines the discursive conditions for the creation of boundaries between “Us” and “Them”.
