ABSTRACT
Hardness test is often used in dental experimental studies. Based on this parameter, correlated with other mechanical properties, it is possible to study micro-hardness of mineralised tissues and to monitor changes in teeth structure and chemical composition. Of several techniques for assessing the hardness, Vickers and Knoop tests are most commonly used. The literature review showed that the hardness measurement is an effective instrument to study mineralised tooth tissues in physiological and pathological conditions. It also allows to evaluate effectiveness of different remedies used in dental practice. The test is easy to perform and inexpensive, although the sample preparation sometimes causes some difficulties.
