ABSTRACT
This paper is proposed to reconsider thedevelopment of active power filter (APF)technologiesthat are routinely utilized to mitigateharmonics in utility power lines. This reconsidercan furthermore be considered as a “tutorial-typepaper” as it provides a holistic coverage of the APFtechnologies by omitting the tedious details, butwithout losing the major essence of the subjectmatter. It is wanted that by this approach, it wouldbe likely to lure more power engineering readers tobe involved in this important and growing area. Thediscussion starts with a short overview of harmonicdistortion difficulties and their impacts onelectricpower and poweredvalue. The operation ofcommon APF topologies, namely the shunt,sequence and hybrid APFs are recounted inminutia. This is followed by a reconsider ondifferent types of reference pointer estimationextraction methods. In specific, the application ofthe p-q and elongation p-q theorems to extract thequotation pointers are elaborated, as they are themost commonly discovered in practical APF systemseventually, an overview of the APF commandschemes is provided. A short consideration on theAPF-solar photovoltaic scheme is furthermoregranted. At the end of the paper, importantreferences are cited to aid readers who areinterested to discover the subject in larger detail.
