ABSTRACT
Effect of Carica papaya linn. seed extract was studied on carbon tetrachloride induced hepatic damage in rats. Carica papaya was found to protect hepatotoxic action of carbon tetrachloride as evidenced by significant reduction in the elevated Serum Glutamate Oxalate Transferase (SGOT), Serum Glutamate Pyruvate Transferase (SGPT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels. Histopathological studies showed marked reduction in fatty degeneration in animals receiving Carica papaya seed extracts and Liv-52® as compared to the carbon tetrachloride group. It is stipulated that the Carica Papaya seed extract treated group was partially protected from hepatic cell damage caused by carbon tetrachloride.
