ABSTRACT
Polyherbal formulation therapy is said to be a current harmacological principle having the advantage of producing maximum therapeutic efficacy with minimum side effects. We assessed thehepatoprotective activity by a combination of ethanolic leaf extracts from Momardica charantia Linn and Azadirachta indica A. Juss (neem) against carbon tetrachloride induced hepatic damage in rats. Administration of Polyherbal formulation (F1 and F2) of ethanolic leaf extracts of Momardica charantia Linn and Azadirachta indica A. Juss (neem) and standard drug silymarine showed significant hepatoprotective against CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity in rats. Hepatoprotective activity of F1 and F2 was due to the decreased levels of serum marker enzymes like serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP). And serum levels of total proteins and bilurubin were also estimated. Silymarine was used as standard drug. The perusal pharmacological assay shows that Polyherbal formulation of F2 was good hepatotoxic agent as compared to F1 formulation withreference drug at a higher dose level. the Polyherbal formulation has decreased the enzyme level of SGOT, SGPT, ALP, Bilirubin by the higher dose and these result are statistically significant P < 0.01 when compared with CCl4 group, while increases the proteins serum level to. The results are comparable to that of silymarin as a standard. The polyconstituents were identified and hepatoprotective effect is might be due to combined effect of all these ethanol extracts of Momardica charantia Linn and Azadirachta indica leaf.
