ABSTRACT
The objective of the present article was to identify the fragments of native vegetation in the process of spontaneous regeneration of the city of Piquete, São Paulo, Brazil, 1991-2008. Such fragments play the role of natural sinks for atmospheric carbon. For this, we used satellite data and GIS software distributed freely. The spontaneous carbon sinks were identified from the preparation of two maps of land cover. In the period of 17 years were detected 1,377 hectares of vegetation regenerated. The deforestation rate in the interval was 340 hectares. The balance between deforestation and regeneration obtained a positive balance, increased vegetation cover in Piquete / SP corresponded to 13.32% compared to 1991. The spontaneous carbon sinks represented 949 hectares of land in the city.
