ABSTRACT
Objectives: Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease, causedby Toxoplasma gondii, its prevalence varies dependingon geographic location, age, nutrition and hygiene habits. In this study, it was aimed to investigate seroprevelanceof antibodies occurring against Toxoplasma gondii, whichcan lead to congenital infections in risky group, women ofreproductive age, referred to Şanlıurfa Women’s Healthand Maternity Hospital in years between January 2007and December 2009, and to compare its results with theprevious studies.Materials and methods: Sera obtained from women, their age range was 15 to 49, the mean age of 28.35 ±7.48 were studied with chemiluminescense immunoassayand electrochemiluminescence methods and toxoplasmaantibody results were investigated, retrospectively. Results: In pregnant and non-pregnant women’s samples,anti-toxoplasma IgG antibodies seropositivity wasfound as 68.9% and 63.0%, respectively, whereas antitoxoplasmaIgM antibodies seropositivity was found as2.8% and 3.0%, respectively. In both (pregnant and nonpregnant),the most frequent seropositivity rates for antitoxoplasmaIgG were detected in 35 to 45 years-old agegroup. Conclusions: In conclusion, routine scanning for toxoplasmaseropositivity may not be needed because of thehigh seropositivity ratios in this province. Education of allsensitive mothers about protection and control of toxoplasmainfection and obstetrical follow-up can decreasethe risk of congenital anomalies related to toxoplasmosis.J Clin Exp Invest 2012; 3(1): 61-65
