Isolation and Characterization of Dibutyl phthalate from Ipomoea carnea stem and its Qantification by HPTLC .

Medicinally important plant species Ipomoea is reported in Indian system of medicine from ancient times. Ipomoea carnea is one of those reported as used in folkmedicine. Chemical investigation about the plant is very limited. Taking this into consideration, chromatographic separation of the components from ethylacetate extract of the stem of I. carnea was carried out. A bioactive secondary metabolite – dibutyl phthalate was isolated for the first time from this plant source.The structure of the isolated compound was elucidated by IR, MS, 1H-NMR, 13C- NMR, DEPT etc. Quantification of the compound from various extracts wascarried out by HPTLC method.
