Mosquito Larvicidal, Oviposition deterrent and Repellent properties of Vitex negundo L extracts against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi, and Culex quinquefasciatus

The leaf extract of Vitex negundo with different solvents viz., acetone, chloroform, hexane, petroleum ether and ethanol were tested for larvicidal, oviposition deterrent and repellent activities against the mosquitoes Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi, and Culex quinquefasciatus. Larval mortality was observed and recorded after 24 h exposure period. Vitex negundo shows the LC50 and LC90 values of these three mosquitoes were 242.14, 645.4, 24.5 and to 435.83, 1161.82, 224.10 ppm respectively. In oviposition deterrent activity, the highest concentration of (0.1%) Vitex negundo produce 94.2 % in Aedes aegypti, 96.4 % in Anopheles stephensi and 99.8 % in Culex quinquefasciatus. Skin repellent test at 0.02 ppm concentration of Vitex negundo gives the complete protection time ranges from 110 to 271 minutes. The plant exerted the highest protection time of 126.8 minutes. The data highlights the importance of Vitex negundo aspromising local plants with excellent potential for controlling Cx. quinquefasciatus,Ae. aegjpti and An. stephensi mosquitoes.
