ABSTRACT
Demarcation in human interaction is through two channels:one transmits explicit messages; the other transmits implicitmessages about the speakers themselves knowingly orunknowingly. Both linguistics and technology haveinvested enormous effort in trying to understand the first(explicit) channel, but the second (implicit) is not as wellunderstood. First, building an emotion detection systemmakes it possible to assess the extent to which theoreticalproposals explain people's everyday competence inunderstanding emotion. Second, model building enforcescoherence. It is true that emotions play an important role inthe making of speech. The deduction of emotions fromspeech is of recent origin and it is the primary focus of thisresearch paper.
