Optical networks using wavelength divisionmultiplexing (WDM) technology modulate multiplechannels over a single fiber. The most commonarchitecture utilized for establishingcommunication in WDM optical networks iswavelength routing, where the communicationbetween a source and a destination node isperformed by setting up optical channels betweenthem, called light-paths from the networkperspective. In optical WDM networks, transmissionof information along optical lines is advantageoussince it has high transmission capacity, scalability,feasibility and also high reliability. But since largeamount of information is being carried, anyproblem during transmission can lead to severedamage to the data being carried. In this paper, wepropose to develop a routing and wavelengthutilization algorithm which considers twoconstraints for selecting the best path. The twoconstraints are based on the available free load andthe number of wavelength used in the link. Basedon these constraints, two cost functions on load andwavelength are determined, which yields acombined cost function. For each pair of sourceand destination, the path with the minimumcombined cost function is selected as the primarypath for data transmission, allocating the sufficientwavelength. This study paper proposes a RWUalgorithm for the problem of establishing the set ofefficient light paths for a given set of connectionrequests. The effectiveness of the proposed RWUalgorithm is demonstrated by simulation. This studydivides the routing and wavelength allocationprocess in two step problem with a goal ofminimizing Number of wavelength channel andnumber of wavelength conversion required. Thisalgorithm thus provides a reliable path for the datatransmission.
