NUMBER OF PLANTS TO REPRESENT S2 MAIZE FAMILIES TO OBTAIN S2 X S2 HIBRIDS

ABSTRACT
This investigation aimed at determining the minimum number of S2 plants per family required in order to generate S2 x S2 experimental hybrids. Nineteen S0:2 x S0:2 hybrids derived from S0 populations from the commercial hybrids AG-1043 and XL-345 were evaluated for this purpose. These hybrids were generated by intercrossing 45 individuals per family. Sample sizes of 3, 6, 12 and 24 individuals within each family (same ear) were evaluated. Performance of the S0:2 x S0:2 hybrid combinations was assessed at two locations in Southern Minas Gerais State: Lavras (21o14’S latitude - 45o00’W longitude) and Ijaci (21o10’S latitude - 44o55’W longitude). The trials were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with three replications in a split-plot scheme in which plots were comprised of S0:2 x S0:2 hybrids and sub-plots of sample sizes. The following traits were assessed: plant and ear height and diameter, ear weight, husked ear and grain yield, ear length, weight of 200 grains and prolificacy. Analysis of variance was undertaken and the corresponding interaction progeny x sample size decomposed. This analysis allowed us to study not only the effect of the sample sizes within each family but also of families within each sample size. In addition, genetic and phenotypic parameters were estimated for each sample size. No significant difference among the number of individuals in each cross was detected for the majority of the traits and S0:2 families. Thus, it was concluded that the minimum number of individuals needed to represent the S2 maize families to produce hybrids was three. However, for practical purposes such as the availability of sufficient seed for further evaluations, it is recommended that this number should be greater than three.
