Corpuscallosum consists of axons of pyramidal neurons situatedin cortical layers II/III and V, which use glutamate as aneurotransmitter. Despite this, interhemisphericinteractions can be both excitatory and inhibitory.Callosum enables interhemispheric transfer of informationand learned associations, directing of attention, bilateralmovement coordination and unitary perception of bodysurface. Activity of one hemisphere can influenceplasticity of the other. However, published data providevery divergent experimental results. Damage in onehemisphere (for example due to stroke) impairsinterhemispheric balance and often results in enhancedactivation of areas of the intact hemisphere homotopic tothe site of lesion, which can facilitate compensatory plasticchanges. On the other hand, animal experiments showthat plasticity in the contralesional hemisphere isdecreased. This question is important especially forneurorehabilitation and requires further investigation.
