Phenology and characterization of seeds and seedlings of Theobroma grandiflorum (Wild. ex Sprengel) Schuman.

Phenological aspects of Copoazú: Theobroma grandiflorum (Willd.ex Sprengel) Schumann; were analyzed and the germination stages and morphology of seedling of the species of fruit-bearing trees were characterized. The species is used as nutritious complement in some communities Piaroa, located in the North Sector of the Forest Reservation Sipapo, in the proximities of the rivers Cuao and Sipapo. The phenological states were obtained from information of herbaria and with field observations. The herbarium revised were: Puerto Ayacucho (TFAV), Mérida (MER), Guanare (PORT), Maracay (MY), and Caracas (VEN). The routine analyses of the seeds were carried out according to the international rules ISTA, the seddling development was evaluated in greenhouse. Phenological results show that T. grandiflorum bloom and fructifies a single time a year; it is of late blossom and fructification of early flowering of wide season. Seeds are recalcitrant with humidity content of 24,6% and a production of 340 seeds per kilogram in a 19 day-germination period. Seedlings are classified as chryptocotilar and hypogeous.
