Herbal medicines are prepared from a variety of plant materials as leaves, stems, roots, bark etc. they usually contain may be biologically active ingredients andare used preliminary for treating mild or chronic ailments. There are very few medicinal herbs of commercial importance which are not found in this country. Indiaofficially recognizes over 3000 plants for their medicinal value. The present paper enumerates the phytochemical and pharmacological evaluation of dried leavesof the plant Elytraria acaulis (L.F.) Lindau (acanthacea). Attempt was made to isolate and characterized the active constituents of Elytraria acaulis forantihyperglycemic activity of alloxan induced diabetic rats on the basis of IR, NMR and GC-MS studies.
