PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF DETARIUM MICROCARPUM ROOT EXTRACTS OBTAINED IN DEMSA, ADAMAWA STATE NIGERIA.

ABSTRACT
Methanol, Hexane and Acetone mixture (1:1:1) and aqueous extracts of powdered roots of Detarium microcarpum were separately screened for basic phytocompounds and anti-microbial activity using Agar diffusion method against Neisseiria gonorrhoea, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pyrogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Proteus mirabilis, Shigella dysenteriae, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Salmonella enterica. The proximate analysis revealed that the percentage crude protein, crude fibre, ash content, fat extract, carbohydrate and moisture content of Detarium microcarpum root were 1.58, 14.83, 8.82, 5.22, 64.26 and 5.30 respectively and the energy value was found to be 310.32kcal. The aqueous extract was active against all the test bacteria. The solvent extract was active only against Escherichia coli, Neisseiria gonorrhoea, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyrogenes. The minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of the solvent extract is 13 mg/cm3 for all the four bacteria. The minimum inhibition concentrations of the aqueous extract are: 20 mg/cm3 for Klebsiella pneumoniae, Shigella dysenteriae and Salmonella enterice; 17 mg/cm3 for Neisseiria gonorrhoeae, Proteus mirabilis, Streptococcus pyrogenes, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa; 13 mg/cm3 for staphylococcus aureus. The results of the study justifiy the use of Detarium microcarpum in traditional medicine for the treatment of Neisseiria gonorrhoea, dysentery and syphilis.
