Phytochemical screening and antioxidative activity of aqueous extract of Indian Camellia sinensis

ABSTRACT
The phytochemical and antioxidant activity of Indian Green tea, Camellia sinensis was analyzed using various biochemical assays. Aqueous extract of Indian green tea was found to have the presence of tannins, flavonoids, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, alkaloids, steroids, saponins and anthraquinones. The antioxidant activity ofaqueous extract was analyzed using DPPH assay, hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity and reducing power assay. The total phenol content of the aqueous extract was found to be 0.409 mg gallic equivalent/g of extract powder, when compared to gallic acid and the total flavonoid content was found to be equivalent/g of extract powder, when compared to gallic acid. The IC50 value of the plant aqueous extract for DPPH was found to be between 2-3 μg/ml, whereas the IC50 for hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity was 0.2 mg/ml of the aqueous plant extract. The percentage inhibition for the both the assays showed a dose dependent increase. The reducing power of the plant extract was also increasing with the extract concentration. These results thus imply the antioxidative potential of Indian Green tea.
