ABSTRACT
Phytoestrogens are estrogens like compounds found in plants. The plant compounds that mimic estrogens are touted by some as miracle agents that will preventcancer, coronary heart diseases and osteoporosis. Primarily it was found in soy beans and flaw seeds. Some fifty years ago, researches became aware thatphytoestrogens affect the fertility of livestock. More recently, multiple epidemiological studies have found a relationship between dietary intake of isoflavons andlignin that lowered the rates of certain cancer, CVS problems and menopausal systems. As far back as 1985, it was known that phytoestrogens could compete withestradiol for binding to intracellular estrogen receptors. Although still inconclusive scientific evidence is accumulating to suggest that phytoestrogens may have rolein preventing disease. It is apparent that the study of phytochemicals and their effects on human health will become an ever increasing topic in the 21st century. As our understanding of specific phytochemicals increases, there will undoubtedly be a multitude of applications that will benefit humans. Phytoestrogens can beour friends, in a world that seems increasingly hostile and threatening green allion offers us ways to stay safe and healthy. So long as we use them with wisdom andhonor. In this present review, efforts have been made to summarize the detailed information based on reported scientific evidences regarding plant derivedphytoestrogens.
