ABSTRACT
A 4-year-old boy was seen in hospital because of fever. Few months earlier he had had a pneumococcal meningitis, and to treat its consequences received a cochlear implant. The child was not vaccinated against pneumococcal diseases. Basing on chest X-ray and levels of inflammatory markers the patient was diagnosed with pneumococcal pneumonia and empirical antibiotic therapy was started. After 14 days of treatment gradual improvement was seen. Both meningitis and pneumonia could have been prevented through vaccination. The described case shows that relapse prevention should be an integral part of treatment of patients with invasive pneumococcal disease.
