ABSTRACT
A common practice since the end of the 19th century, the travels of Portuguese educators to foreign lands increased in the following century, due to the growing awareness of the need to find out about what was being done outside Portugal, so as to evaluate the distance travelled and the distance yet to go. The Casa Pia de Lisboa, a model institution at national level, was no exception. Therefore, the journey to France by one of its most eminent teachers, Fernando Pinto Ferreira, raised no doubts, neither to the Casa Pia’s Director, who first proposed it, nor to the Minister of the Interior, who authorized it in 1917. It was, after all, part of the preparation for the full operation of the first Special Education institute for Special Education in Portugal ? the Instituto Médico-Pedagógico.
