Principal assays that to determine the citotoxicity of a substance, some considerations and their utility

The cellular citotoxicity is defined like an alteration of the cellular basic functions, that it bears to a damage that can be detected. Different authors have developed batteries of in vitro tests to predict the toxic effects of some drugs and chemical compounds, using as experimental models the primary cultivations and isolated organs as established cellular lines. The aim of this work is to give a panoramic on the main assays used to determine the citotoxic effect of a substance, as well as some considerations to be carried out each one of the assays and their utility. They were kept in mind the classic assays to determine citotoxicity, such as neutral red release assay, to tie the kenacid blue assay and lastly the reduction of Bromide of dimetil-difenil-tetrazolium assay (MTT). This paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each method from our theoretical and practical experience in the issue, believing that it can be useful for researchers working in this branch of experimental in vitro toxicology.
