The paper draws upon the conclusions of a project (Dynacom) sponsored by the European Union, on the nature and dynamics of organizational competences and capabilities. Such an analysis attempts to identify the relationships between the latter and various forms of knowledge embodied in organizations. Secondly, it compares a capability-centered view of the firm with other approaches – including traditional agency theory and transaction costs economics. Finally, some policy implications are presented. Keywords: Organizational Capabilities; Competences; Resource-Based Theories; Routines; Technological Knowledge; Problem-SolvingJEL-Code: O11; O41
