ABSTRACT
The ability to read, write, speak, listen, and think effectivelyenablesadolescents to learn and to communicate clearlyin and out of school. Adolescents need to have strongreading skills so that they can understand academic content, communicate in a credible way, participate in culturalcommunities, and negotiate the world. The standardsmovement asserts that all students should understandcontent at deeper, more complex levels than have beenadvocated previously. A variety of teaching and learningstrategies have been shown to be effective in assistingadolescent learners to develop their capacity as readers.Nevertheless, according to this paper, there is an “everdeepeningcrisis in adolescent reading.” (Department ofEducation, “Eqrem Çabej” University of Gjirokastra 2004).The paper considers how effective contentbasedreadinginstruction can be brought to life in the classroom in waysthat will make a positive difference for learners.
