ABSTRACT
Radiation is increasingly used for medical purposes and is an established weapon in the diagnosis and the therapy of cancer. Radiation therapy injures or destroyscells in the area being treated by damaging their genetic material. The aim of the present study was to investigate the protective effect of Nardostachys Jatamansiroot extract on radiation induced sickness and haematological damage in rats exposed to 3 Gy Whole body Electron Beam Irradiation. EBR was performed atMicrotron centre, Mangalore University. Treatment of rats with NJE once daily for 15days prior to irradiation was done. After irradiation blood was collected fordetermining the Peripheral blood counts (RBC, WBC), haemoglobin, thrombocyte count and Packed cell volume (PCV) at 6 hr, 12 hr, 24 hr, 48 hr and 5, 10, and15 days of postirradiation. The endogenous spleen colony count was performed at the end of the experiment. The data was analyzed by one way ANOVA followedby Tukey’s test for multiple comparisons. NJE provided protection against death due to haematological disorders. The irradiated rats exhibited a time dependentsignificant elevation (p=0.000) in all the haematological parameters studied and its modulation upto near normal was recorded in pre-irradiation treatment of ratswith NJE. The endogenous spleen colony count was elevated in animal’s treated with NJE before irradiation as compared to that of radiation control animals andalso an elevation in spleen colony count was observed in pre-irradiation treatment of rats with NJE as compared to drug control animals. NJE provided protectionby modulating the radiation induced damage on haematopoietic system.
