In order to study the effects of group psychotherapy in cancer -patlents a group of II women were selected, that were suffering of cancer, were in the hospital for more than two months, had an age between 18 and 55 years, belonged to a lower socioeconomic level and were able to participate in group psychotherapy, The patients were evaluated medically and by the means of the MMPI. After that, they undertook group psychotherapy using Kadis (1959) techníque, and were re-evaluated according to the same criteria. This group was contrasted with a control group in comparable conditions, to which no psychotherapy was gíven, A third group was also studíed, of hospitalized women who did not suffer of cancer, Subjects witb. cancer had higher ICores in some MMPI scales: hypocondria, depression, hysteria and paranoia. Group psychotherapy diminished in these subjects the scores in the following MMPI scales: depressíon, hysteria, paranoia, and social introversion (p. < .05). The importance of studying psychological factors in cancer is indicated.
