This article analyses the possibilities for constructing the professional autonomy of the teachers involved in a special program of continuous teacher training called Programa Pró-Letramento, launched by the Ministry of Education in 2006, as a part of the National Network of Continuous Teacher Training of Basic Education Teachers. The research involved interviews carried out with the three main coordinators of the program in the Duque de Caxias City (Rio de Janeiro State). It was possible to conclude that the program investigated has reproduced the pragmatic model of continuous teacher training.
