ROMANIAN GERMPLASM FUND AND ITS USE IN PLUM BREEDING PROGRAM

ABSTRACT
In Romania, there is a rich plum germplasm fund, located in two research centers: RIFG Pitesti with 582 accessions and RSFG Valcea with 590 accessions, representing wild species, local population, cultivars, selections and rootstock. Ex-situ conservation of accessions is done using three different methods: classical conservation in field collections (plantations), conservation in plastic containers (underground or on the platform), conservation in liquid nitrogen (at -196oC), called cryoconservation. The observations and measurements were done according to the EGPGR descriptors for Prunus genus. The existence of a large number of accessions and their evaluation enabled to create a data bank, part of these data being introduced into the European Gene Bank of Prunus. Genetic resources from Pitesti and Valcea collections were used in the plum breeding program, as follows: ‘Grase de Becs’, ‘Grase de Pesteana’, ‘Carpatin’, ‘Ialomita’, ‘Alina’, ‘Kirke’, ‘Wilhelmina Späth’ for resistance / tolerance to Plum pox virus; ‘Vinete romanesti’, ‘Tuleu timpuriu’, ‘Pescarus’, ‘Anna Späth’ for late blooming; ‘Tuleu gras’, ‘Centenar’, ‘Valcean’, ‘Vinete romanesti’ for fruit quality; ‘Stanley’, ‘Anna Späth’, ‘Valor’, ‘Pescarus’, ‘Centenar’, ‘Pitestean’ for productivity; ‘Stanley’, ‘Anna Späth’, ‘Ialomita’, ‘Diana’, Gras ameliorat for selfertility, etc. 38 autochthonous cultivars, with high quality and tolerance or resistance to major diseases of plum were introduced from the beginning. The breeding program of plum rootstocks used as sources of genes following genotypes: ‘Rosior varatic’, ‘Brompton’, ‘Renclod Verde’, ‘Oteşani 8’, ‘Oteşani 11’, ‘Pixy’, ‘Saint Julien A’, ‘Albe mici’, ‘Scoldus’, ‘Porumbar’, ‘Corcodus 163’, ‘Brooks’ etc. The results have so far resulted in the registration of 11 plum rootstock
