Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxietydisorder that has been estimated to affect several percentof individuals who are exposed to traumatic events. Itis significant that not all individuals exposed totraumatic events develop PTSD symptoms and womenare twice as likely as men to develop PTSD. Otherfactors play a role in the development of this disorder.Symptoms include re-experiencing the trauma (e.g.nightmares or intrusive thoughts), avoidance andnumbing (e.g. memory loss or feeling unable to love),and increased arousal (e.g. difficulty sleeping orhypervigilance). Fundamental features of PTSD includethe following: the symptoms are linked to the traumaticevent and are not random, the symptoms were notpresent prior to the traumatic event, and the symptomsare present 1 month or later than completion of thetraumatic event.
