The growing use of mobile text messages(hereinafter SMS) has given place to a debate on thesocial impact and the psychological effects of this newmass media. In the recent years the massive use ofmobiles and Internet has generated a new way of communicationbased on the abbreviated use of language.In this work we examine the role of SMS as an effectivetool of communication in the way of establishingsocial relationships among young individuals. Furthermorewe examine the reading cognitive cost of SMS;and derived from this analysis and the content of theSMS sentences we extract two conclusions. The firstone is that SMS language is economical enough totransfer relevant information using the abbreviatedlanguage even though it implies a reading cost, thesecond conclusion is that SMS language implies asocio-cultural aspect worthy to be reflected on.
