Solid-state Characterization of Olmesartan Medoxomil Polymorphic Behavior

Full characterization of polymorphic content of bulk drug chemicals has become increasingly important in the pharmaceutical industry. A multitude of analytical techniques are commonly used in this process. In this context, the feasibility of the attenuated total reflectance Fourier transformed infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrophotometry, along with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were applied to investigate the presence of polymorphism in olmesartan medoxomil bulk product. Different solvents and cooling rates of recrystallization originated two new structures distinct from the one used and described in the literature.
