ABSTRACT
Synthetic speech can serve the very useful purpose of communicating computerized information to even laymen. Text-to-speech synthesis is done in two broad steps: text analysis and synthesis. Text analysis generates pronunciation and stress information. The related steps are discussed in this paper. Synthesis is done either from natural speech or by production model. The respective methods, viz. concatenation and formant synthesis, are overviewed in the paper. The paper mentions some state-of-the-art speech synthesis activities in Indian and international languages by referring to a number of systems. Indian language synthesizers have come up, but have to improve quality in order to reach the international level. The thrust areas for R & D are text analysis, prosody, preparation of speech data base and preparation of pronunciation dictionaries in Indian languages.
