This paper evaluates the status and role of visual data in research methods textbooks for programmes relating to sport and leisure. The paper highlights the scope for greater sophistication in the analysisof visual data, including mediated data. Key textbooks in the field of research methods for sport and leisure are reviewed; developing the argument that the growth of academic interest in visual andmediated forms of sporting and leisure experience is insufficiently represented. The claim is made that student research practice may benefit from the teaching of research methods that include anemphasis on the analysis of visual data, in particular semiotics.
