Student nurses´opinion about psychiatric reform  filmed dramatization of madness in machado’s work “o alienista”

Objective: to expand the understanding of psychiatric reform through the work O Alienista. Methodology: this is an exploratory, descriptive and qualitative study, articulated between documentary research and filmed version of the Machado de Assis’ novel. After movie presentation, an open question was elaborated to gather data from 39 students enrolled in the second semester 2008, excluding the components of the group, 15 answered the question, sending it through e-mail to the researches. For data collection 15 students participated by answering e-mail. This study had been approval by the Ethics and Research Committee of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte by protocol 01410051000-06. Results: it was areas of understanding: clarifying the concepts of content and setting, the treatment in asylum model, the relationship of power and critical to professional performance, the recovery of part of the healthy carrier of mental disorder, the prejudice, stigma and social exclusion, and evaluation of the seminar. Conclusion: it is considered that the teaching-learning process reflects the methods of acquisition of knowledge in the training of professional skills necessary for the professional practice.
