ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to identify the opinions of the fourth-grade students who started thefirst-grade with cursive handwriting and their primary school teachers and branch teachersabout handwriting. This is a qualitative study. The research was done in one of the primaryschools in Denizli during the first semester of 2008-2009 education year. In this studyconvenience sampling method which was one of the purposive sampling methods was used. Thesample was branch teachers (n=9) and primary school teachers (n=10) and fourth grade students(n=41). In the research, interview, one of the qualitative research data collection technique wasused. Students commonly think that writing is an obligation. Both teachers and students namecursive and manuscript handwriting in different ways. Teachers support the idea of starting thefirst grade with manuscript handwriting.
