THE TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP PERCEPTIONS OF MANAGERIAL STAFF IN SCHOOLS OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT

ABSTRACT
This research was conducted to determine transformational leadership styles of physical education and sports school managers according to managers’ perceptions and to research influence of academicians’ personal characteristics on their transformational leadership styles.Population was consisted of 89 academic managers who work in 38 Physical Education and Sports School and 2 Sports Sciences and Technology School that are connected to state universities in Turkey, between 2007-2008 educational terms. In the data collection process, Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire-MLQ 5X-SHORT developed by Bernard Bass and Bruce Avolio (13) and “Personal Information Form” developed by the researcher in order to determine personal characteristics were used. U test was conducted to compare dual groups which were examined whether they are differentiated or not according to their personal characteristics influence on using level of leadership styles of school managers. Kruskal-Wallis variance analyse statistical method was used to compare more than two groups. Significance level was accepted as 0.05. In the result of research; In transformational leadership style has been perceived at most accruing sub-dimension idealization effect (behaviour) (X=3,46), at least accruing sub-dimension idealized influence (attributed) (X=3,28) according to managers’ perception working in Physical Education and Sports School. There is no significant difference in total sub-dimension of transformational leadership among school managers according to their age, academic title, professional seniority, managerial seniority, status of having course and/or seminars about management and bachelor graduation. However, there is a significant difference in inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, individualized consideration of managers’ according to their gender.
