ABSTRACT
The basal ganglia are involved in motor control.However, recent studies have focused on the role of basalganglia in emotional and cognitive processes. In thepresent paper we review studies on basal ganglia andemotions. There are five basal ganglia-frontocorticalcircuits: motor, oculomotor, dorsolateral prefrontal,lateral orbitofrontal and limbic. Dysfunctions of the lastthree circuits are associated with emotional impairmentssuch as depression, mania, anxiety, and apathy. Lesionof left globus pallidus leads to depression in Parkinson’sdisease patients. Moreover, hyperactivity of the caudatenucleus is linked with the emergence of obsessivecompulsivedisorders. Dysfunction of the lateralorbitofrontal circuit gives rise to personality changesmarked by loss of control, inappropriate jesting,inflexible behavior, difficulties in expression of emotionsand extreme introversion. The lateral orbitofrontal andlimbic circuits play an important role in depression. Thebasal ganglia are involved in expression and perceptionof emotions. The striatum is likely to take part in rewardprocesses and motivated behaviour.
