ABSTRACT
This work describes the investigation carried out on the uptake and retention of 137Cs by Murrel (Channa striatus) under laboratory conditions. The accumulated 137Cs concentration in the whole body of the fishes was measured at certain intervals up to 38 days. A significant accumulation of 137 Cs was found in the fish species. However, a steady state accumulation of 137 Cs could not be achieved at the end of the experiment. The bioaccumulation factors and the distribution of 137Cs in edible parts in the fish species were determined. The everage effective half-life of 137Cs in the fish species was found to be 196 days. Accumulation of 137Cs in edible parts was found to be 80% of whole body accumulation.
