ABSTRACT
The effect of Zeranol implants on growth performance in fattening Pelibuey lambs was determined. Fourteen intact lambs were used (22.4±0.4 kg and 159±2 days old; mean ± SE) in a experimental design of two factors with repeated measures on one factor. The fixed effect was with zeranol implants and without zeranol implants. The experiment was conducted for 112 days. The lambs were grazed in Estrella de Africa Cynodon plectostachyus and fed supplement (3.0 Mcal ME kg-1 lamb-1 and 14.5% PC). The supplement was offered in relation to the body weigh to satisfy 60% the animals energy requirements (daily weight gain of 200 g). Variables were analyzed by analysis of variance. None of variables was affected (Pa0.01) by zeranol implants. The means were: initial body weight was 23.6±0.4 kg; and final body weight was 37.8±0.6 kg; daily weight gain 145±5 g; daily feed 763±8 g d-1; Zeranol implants had not a positive effect on growth performance in fattening lambs.
