ABSTRACT
Bauhinia variegata Linn. is one of the medicinal plants used in traditional systems of medicines like Siddha, Ayurvedha, Unani. All the parts of the tree are usedto treat various diseases in folklore medicine. The present study was conducted to determine the antioxidant potential ( in vitro)of ethanol extract of Bauhiniavariegata Linn. leaves (EBV) by two complementary approaches; evaluation of free radical scavenging capacity and its effect on activated neutrophils(oxidativestress). DPPH, hydroxyl, nitric oxide and superoxide anion radicals scavenging activity was determined. Total reducing power was also estimated. The effectof EBV on activated neutrophils was determined by considering two study groups; A-activated neutrophils and B- EBV incubated neutrophils. The IC 50 value ofEBV in DPPH radical scavenging assay was 38.5 μg/ml. Similarly, the IC50 value for nitric oxide (70 μg/ml), superoxide anion (17μg/ml) and hydroxyl radical( 48.5 μg/ml) was also determined. The level of oxidation products like lipid peroxides and hydroperoxides decreased significantly in neutrophils (P
