„What do you want?!“ The Relevance of Change in Status and Role for Entrants

ABSTRACT
Human personality is subject to continuous formation and progression. It has to face new tasks and challenges every day and restructure itself in new situations and along with changing surrounding conditions. At the same time, every individual possesses permanent traits that are resistant to change and that characterize him or her as a person, or his or her behavior. Personality is thus an ambivalent constituent of human beings that is continuously changing and constant at the same time. Because personality affects an individuals’ behavior substantially (Pervin, Cervone & John, 2005), the question arises, how it develops in face of a change in life circumstances, and which effects this development yields on the persons’ behavior and the environment. Transition to working life is such a change in life circumstances, at which twelve university students were accompanied in the present qualitative study (Hahnzog, 2011). A central factor is thus the change in status and roles that results from career entry, i. e., the change in expectancies of relevant others as well as their evaluation. Results show that a conscious reflection of one’s own personality structure can enhance the diversity of individual resources as well as minimize potential strains in graduates that just enter professional life. The findings have implications on how the transition phase can be formed and accompanied by universities as well as business companies.
