Various therapeutic strategies employing stem cells have been proposed as the alternative therapies for a multitude of diseases that are difficult to treat using standard methods. Therefore rapidly evolving regenerative medicine gives a hope that stem cells could be employed to treat injured organs such as myocardium after heart infarction, brain after stroke, spinal cord after mechanical injury as well as to treat diabetes and Parkinson disease. Stem cell therapies become also the focus of interest of gastroenterologists. It is envisioned that stem cells could be employed to treat several disorders of gastro-intestinal tract and liver. Stem cell therapies, in particular those utilizing embryonic stem cells are subject of controversy and debate. This review is an update of a current point of view on potential application of stem cell based therapies to treat gastrointestinal disorders.
