ABSTRACT
Formal thought disorders, defined by DSM-IV as“disordered speech or utterances”, also known asschizophasia (language disorder in schizophrenia), hasbeen treated as a core feature of this psychosis sinceKraepelin and Bleuler. On the other hand, factoranalysis of the symptoms of schizophrenia (Liddle 1987)isolates a disorganization syndrome, of which languagedisorder is the major constituent. A meta-analysis ofstudies with factor analysis revealed that the majorityof language phenomena in schizophrenia run in the wayexpected of the syndrome, although, as expected, thissyndrome does not include “negative” languagephenomena, i.e. poverty of content speech and povertyof speech, that are features of the “psychomotor poverty”syndrome of schizophrenia.
