Aerated submerged biofilter as an alternative for wastewater treatment of a Biotechnological Center at Unoesc, Campus Videira

The purpose of this research was to test and to asses the efficiency of Aerated Submerged Biofilter technologies (here after, BAS) for laboratories wastewater treatment of a Biotechnological Center at UNOESC, campus Videira. The research was carried on experimental laboratorial scale, where are done two reactors with distint materials supports (pieces of plastic tubs used to protect light spinning, called “conduíte” – Reactor 1, plastic caps of bottles made of PET – Reactor 2). The reactors were feeding in batches with detention time of 24 hours, upward flow and by force aeration. The monitoring system the parameters assessed were: Hydrogen Potential (pH), Redox Potential (pR), temperature, DQO, Total Suspended Solids (SST), Reactive Phosphorus (PO43-), Nitrogen Serie (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate) e Sulfate (SO42-). The average experimental results ranged (according to 12 first operation weeks, in others words, 76 days) showed a removal average of DQO of 62% for effluent the Reactor 1 and 61% % for effluent the Reactor 2. The average removal of PO43- was 60% for both reactors. In conclusion, the Aerated Submerged Biofilter can be used as an alternative for wastewater treatment of a Biotechnological Center.
