Aortic aneurism with surgical indication in pregnancy - a case report

A downward trend in the coexistence of cardiovascular disease and pregnancy has been observed in the last few years. In these cases, it is often the gestational hemodynamic overload that triggers the clinical manifestation of an underlying disorder. Nevertheless, open-heart surgery is rarely necessary during pregnancy and should be avoided whenever possible. The authors report the case of a pregnant woman who underwent surgical repair of an ascending aortic aneurism at the end of the first trimester. The fetal effects of the intervention, as well as the adaptations of the procedure in order to improve the outcomes, are discussed.
