Phyllanthus amarus traditionally used to correct erectile dysfunction by monitoring the effect on the concentration of penile cyclic guanosine mono-phosphate (cGMP) and the concentration of plasma Nitric Oxide (NO) in male guinea pigs that were administered different doses (100, 200 and 400 mg kg-1 body weight) of the plant extract using direct immunoassay kits. Physiological saline and sildenafil were given to animals that served as the controls. Phytochemical screening of the plant determined included alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins, tannins, steroids and cardiac glycosides. There was no statistical significant difference in the weight of the animals before and after the administration of the plant extract.
