ABSTRACT
Wordplay and irony are among the most difficult features of language, especially when itcomes to translating them to another language. These rhetorical devices not only create a tensionbetween different meanings, but also between different domains of knowledge and experience. Andtheir complexity is even greater when they are based on proverbs, which are in turn very intricateunits of language. Therefore, they can create serious translation difficulties, both linguistic andcultural, which might make them resist transfer to the target language. The present paper willhighlight the main challenges posed by their translation, while also pointing out some strategiesused by the Romanian translator when dealing with English proverb-based wordplay and irony.
