This article focuses on the issues of bilingual education inGjirokastra, in the 9-year primary schools, as an importantlink in the process of foreign language learning by ourchildren. Albania has quickly embraced the concept of earlyforeign language learning. A memorandum signed by therespective governments of Albania and Italy in 2002 openedthe way to a teaching process conducted in two languages,Italian and Albanian, in the upper cycle of the primary schooland also in the high schools, so that half of the subjectswould be taught in a foreign language. Through this paperwe try to give our opinion why the implementation of thisprogram of dual language immersion is necessary as aneducational system based on pragmatic and functionalconcepts. The achievement of the dual language immersionprogram also in our schools, aims at a transmission ofknowledge for a better internalization of the foreignlanguage, and also at improving the perspectives of ourstudents in the European labor market. The difficulties andthe obstacles which might condition this process cannotdiminish the advantages and benefits that the childrenstudying in these schools where the teaching process willbe conducted in two languages, will have over the childrenwho will study a foreign language as a separate subject. Therole of parents and a highly qualified teaching staff areimportant factors in the success of this process.
