ABSTRACT
The central topic of this study is the mining, extraction and processing of basalt quarries and the environmental issues involved in these activities. Firstly, a discussion on the environmental aspects inherent to this activity is presented, as well as a report of the evolutional process of Brazil’s environmental legislation and the criteria for regulation/liberation petition of basalt extractionareas. Furthermore, a quantification of the existing basalt at legal quarries in activity in the north-west region of the state of Rio Grande do Sul is made, with the intention of evaluating the actual and future mineral reserve of the deposits.The results obtained indicate a large availability of basalt in the area included in the region investigated.
